Ry Moran is the director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. On behalf of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, he helped gather nearly 7,000 statements of former residential school students and others affected by the residential school system. He is a proud member of the Métis Nation and is deeply honoured and thankful to have served Survivors, intergenerational Survivors and all Indigenous Peoples.
The residential school system separated 150,000 Indigenous children from their families — and the last one closed in 1997.

: Truth and Reconciliation in Canada

Last week, the Truth and Reconciliation commission began its final hearings in Edmonton. In May of last year Dennis Saddleman spoke at the Commission. The B.C. man performed some of his poetry, something he says has helped him heal.
Kamloops residential school survivor Dennis Saddleman suffered devastating trauma after being forced to attend the institution for 11 years. But he discovered a talent for poetry in later life that helped with his healing.
